Very interesting read into into the wrtting business, I liked the candor and radomness of it all. Good book to read if your any creative business and you have to sell your own ideas for a living.
A "must- have" reference for any aspiring or practicing entertainment industry screenwriting professionals September 3, 2006 Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) Doing It For Money: The Agony And Ecstasy Of Writing And Surviving In Hollywood is a no- nonsense, insider's account of what writing for the "Hollywood Machine" is really like. From idiotic executives to volatile stars to rewrites that shred the intentions of the original script, Doing It For Money tell it like it is, and offers a wealth of tips, such as registering one's work with the Writers Guild of America as a hedge against plagiarism (both guild and non-guild members can do this for a small fee). A highly readable account, filled with fascinating anecdotes sure to entertain even non-writers as surely as they educate aspiring writers about what to expect. Deftly edited by Daryl G. Nickens for The Writers Guild Foundation, Doing It For Money is a "must- have" reference for any aspiring or practicing entertainment industry screenwriting professionals.
More than just stories August 16, 2006 Gia Lapin (U.S.) I really liked this book because it not only gave me an inside look into what writing scripts is really like, but it also offered great tips and advice for working the hollywood machine. Some of the stories were really funny and biting and some were more serious, but I enjoyed them all. A few are similar but I guess that just shows that the experience is shared in some ways. I know I procrastinate whenever possible! So, it's good to know that the writers of Syriana, Field of Dreams and The Big Easy all do the same. Maybe I'll be an A-list writer some time soon. I know I still want to even after reading some of the horror stories. Really, some were just unbelievable. A fun read!
Disappointing July 28, 2006 W. Hare (Dallas) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought the book because of a good review in Entertainment Weekly. Hmm. To me, it was basically lightweight, somewhat self-serving stuff really without much to say. Three pieces were good, the rest forgettable. The book was also disorganized -- much of the writing uncredited (and presumably by the editor, but why hide it?) as an example. Compared to Kazan On Kazan and the last Bogdanovich, two books of the genre recently read that delivered, sorry, but this book struck out. Makes one wonder about the quality of minds at work in Hollywood today. And this was a Guild project. Hmm. -Bill Hare
The Real Deal from the Real Players July 17, 2006 Mark Halmagy (Los Angeles, CA USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a first hand peek behind the curtain of Hollywood by some of the best names in the business. The book provides great first-hand vantage points to the pain and pleasure that come with writing in Hollywood. It provides some great insights into the art of writing itself, as well as dealing with those amorphous minds known as development executives. For anyone interested in not only screenwriting, but fans of movie & TV itself, and how the final gourmet sausage comes out of the factory, this book delivers on all counts.
